The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has identified suicide as one of the leading cause of death in the U.S. Suicide rates increased by 33 percent between 1999 and 2017, but the largest increase occurred for non-Hispanic American Indian or Alaska Native women, up 139 percent.
