New and Exciting Training Opportunity from BE A BRIDGE

Greetings Eastern and Central Regional Partners

First, thank you for all the work you’ve done with and on behalf of the project in your respective regions and communities. Your time and input has been absolutely critical to the success of the project to this point.

It is imperative that all the BE A BRIGE partners continue to be engaged and ride this great momentum and synergy in building capacity to address tobacco related chronic diseases. With that being said, we want to ensure that we build on the foundation you have laid in Eastern and Central PA even as we focus on the next summit in the Western PA region.

We are excited to offer a new training targeted to you, the BE A BRIDGE RACs and your key stakeholders in tobacco control and chronic disease: “Developing Integrated Tobacco Control and Chronic Disease Programming for Diverse Communities: The Why, What and How”. This training was developed for the purpose of impacting organizations in the areas of program integration and policy implementation as it relates to integrated programs. This training falls in line with the Chronic Disease and Community Intervention Section of CDC’s Best Practices for Comprehensive Tobacco Control Programs, where they highlight Implementing community interventions that link tobacco control interventions with chronic disease prevention programs as a key indicator for reducing the burden of tobacco-related diseases. The goal of the training is to build the capacity of your organization and your partner organizations to better develop, secure, implement and evaluate integrated or programs.

We are offering full-day training in a two part format. Part one will be a morning workshop targeting the RACs and your key stakeholders including program staff. This session will address some of the very foundational principles of developing and implementing integrated programs. The afternoon session is targeted specifically to RACs and any key stakeholders vested in policy implementation for integrated programs.

Venues are as follows:

Eastern Regional Advisory Council Training:
June 9th 9:00am – 4:00pm
The Best Western Lehigh Valley Hotel & Conference Center
Bethlehem, PA

Central Regional Advisory Council Training:
June 11th 9:00am – 4:00pm
The Nittany Lion Inn
State College, PA

Please contact Marlin L. Williams (information below) and let her know if you are interested in attending this training, if this training would be beneficial for your key leaders and stakeholders and if the dates and time present a conflict with any other large events occurring in your area. Unfortunately, we did not have many options in regards to open venues and are hoping these dates do not conflict with your schedules. If largely approved by you, the RAC, we wil go ahead and prepare the event registration and begin the formal invitation process.

Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Finding Your Inner Leader – An "Aha!” Conference to Reach, Rouse, and Ready Future Public and Community Health Leaders
Brooklyn, NY

Friday, June 20: Finding Your Inner Leader – An "Aha!” Conference to Reach, Rouse, and Ready Future Public and Community Health Leaders (afternoon spotlight on Diabetes leadership opportunities, challenges, and requirements) at Kingsborough Community College (2001 Oriental Blvd, Brooklyn, NY 11235).

This is a full-day conference for community and public health practitioners, their supervisors, managers, mentors, and teachers.

The primary goal of this conference is to inspire current practitioners – who haven’t yet considered taking on a leadership role - to seek out leadership training and experience. With the retirement of many community and public health leaders and the demand for new leaders to address health disparities, now is the time to identify front line health workers with leadership potential and to help them prepare to successfully step, jump or be catapulted into leadership roles at the committee, task force, project, work unit, and department levels.

While the major focus of the conference is on identifying and inspiring future leaders, the conference also provides sessions for current leaders, co-workers, and educators who are uniquely poised to support the leadership development of future leaders. Diabetes specialists are alerted to leadership opportunities, challenges, and requirements in a variety of roles: education, patient management, fundraising, advocacy, community organizing, etc.

The conference includes five general sessions for all participants including four short keynote presentations and a Conversations with Courageous Leaders panel; separate sessions for aspiring leaders; their supervisors, managers, and mentors; community and public health teachers/faculty and internship supervisors, and, for community leaders, a special new “Mini-MPH Degree” session. There are also two afternoon roundtable discussions for aspiring Diabetes leaders.

The conference is co-sponsored by Kingsborough Community College’s Program in Community Health; the Greater New York Society for Public Health Education; and the Brooklyn Borough President's Office. Dozens of community-based organizations, health care and professional organizations, colleges and universities, and other groups are supporting the conference in various ways.

Up to 7 CHES and other continuing education credits will be available. More information and Early Bird Registration: www.kingsborough.edu/inner_leader or Conference Chair, Karen Denard Goldman, kgoldman@kbcc.cuny.edu or 718-368-5716.

Penn State’s 16th Annual Symposium on Family Issues
University Park, PA

Penn State’s 16th Annual Symposium on Family Issues

“Development of Hispanic Children in Immigrant Families: Challenges and Prospects,” is the topic of Penn State’s 16th Annual Symposium on Family Issues, to be held October 23-24, 2008, on the University Park campus. Sixteen scholars from major institutions will integrate perspectives from multiple social sciences and address policy implications.

One in five children in the U.S. has immigrant parents, and children of immigrant parents are the fastest growing component of the child population. Given the different circumstances and experiences of immigrant populations, our symposium’s focus is on Hispanic families. They are themselves a diverse group, and constitute the largest ethnic minority group in the nation.

A range of challenges face immigrant children and their families. Negative sentiments toward immigrant families have not been as high as they are now for nearly a century. National immigration policy appears to be in a gridlock, but local policies are rapidly changing. Immigrant destinations have expanded to include both new metropolitan locations and rural areas. These and other changes have altered the social, political, and economic forces in host communities and the broader social contexts in which children develop. Thus, the study of children and youth in immigrant families is timely and important.

The purpose of the 2008 Family Symposium will be to examine four arenas of research and policy that are significant in the development and well-being of children and youth in immigrant Hispanic families: (1) the social ecologies of children and youth in immigrant families, including the range of setting characteristics and the ways in which setting characteristics have implications for child and youth well-being and development, (2) the role of families in children’s successful adaptation to new “host” environments; (3) the implications of the school and community contexts as well as education policies for children’s school experiences and academic achievement; and (4) the roles of health care, social service provision, and health policies in children’s health and well-being.

Lead speakers include: Richard Alba (SUNY Albany), Kimberly Updegraff (Arizona State University), Carola Suárez-Orozco (NYU), and Margarita Alegria (Harvard Medical School).

Discussants include: Randolph Capps (Urban Institute), Stephen J. Trejo (University of Texas, Austin), Stephen M. Quintana (University of Wisconsin), Jennifer Van Hook (Penn State), Robert Bradley (University of Arkansas, Little Rock), Donald Hernandez (SUNY Albany), Katharine Donato (Vanderbilt University), Suet-ling Pong (Penn State), Andrew Fuligni (UCLA), José Escarce (UCLA, RAND), Robert E. Roberts (University of Texas), and Cheryl Boyce (National Institutes of Health).

Symposium sponsors include the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). Information and registration at http://www.pop.psu.edu/events/symposium/2008.htm or contact Carolyn Scott at css7@psu.edu. The symposium is free to all PSU faculty and students and will be held at the Nittany Lion Inn on the University Park campus.

The Sixth International IPM Symposium
Portland, OR

The Sixth International IPM Symposium, "Transcending Boundaries," will be held in Portland, Oregon March 24-26, 2009 at the Portland Convention Center.

Symposium sessions will address IPM across disciplines, internationally, in the market place, urban settings, greenhouses and more.

The Fifth IPM Symposium, held in 2006, attracted more than 650 research, education, government, industry and environmental and health professionals from 23 countries for three days of presentations, networking and organizational meetings on key pest management issues.

Integrated Pest Management, or IPM, is a long-standing, science-based, decision-making process that identifies and reduces risks from pests and pest management related strategies. It coordinates the use of pest biology, environmental information, and available technology to prevent unacceptable levels of pest damage by the most economical means, while posing the least possible risk to people, property, resources, and the environment. IPM provides an effective strategy for managing pests in all arenas from developed residential and public areas to wild lands. IPM serves as an umbrella to provide an effective, all encompassing, low-risk approach to protect resources and people from pests." (IPM Roadmap, May 17, 2004) For up-to-date information on the Symposium, visit website: http://www.ipmcenters.org/ipmsymposium09/. To receive future notices about the Symposium, send your e-mail address to ipmsymposium@ad.uiuc.edu.
